Together, Building Sustainability

Yayasan Agathis Dammara Karbon (Adakarbon) is a non-profit foundation committed to fostering sustainable environmental solutions through carbon sequestration (biochar) and reforestation initiatives.

Adakarbon works closely with farmers to harness local knowledge and available resources. By working closely with academic institutions, we help bridge the gap between theory and practice. These partnerships foster a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability.

By investing in training, education, and workshops, we empower farmers to implement sustainable biochar practices that can lead to more resilient and productive agricultural systems, ultimately contributing to food security and environmental sustainability.

Create a sustainable agricultural environment and adapt the carbon-mindful agricultural concept in Indonesia.

  • Research and develop innovative biochar technology.
  • Implement biochar-based technology on a farmer scale.
  • Become the primary source of information and knowledge exchange of biochar in Indonesia.
  • Provide educational and technical assistance to small-holder farmers in implementing sustainable and regenerative agriculture.
  • Support government decisions regarding regulations surrounding sustainable agroecosystems.

Behind The Name

The Agathis dammara, commonly known as the damar tree, is a coniferous species native to Indonesia and the Philippines.

  • This remarkable tree is valued for a wide range of uses, including its resin for painting, traditional medicine, and its high-quality timber used in furniture and construction. Notably, it is also recognized for its exceptional ability to absorb and sequester carbon, making it one of the most effective trees in combating climate change. Its versatility inspires us to remain adaptable in meeting the diverse needs of people and communities.
  • Belonging to the family Araucariaceae, which dates back to the Jurassic era, Agathis dammara embodies resilience, encouraging us to persevere in the face of modern challenges like climate change.
  • This tree is endemic to Sulawesi, a unique and vibrant island that witnessed the first Kontiki fire method in Indonesia, introduced by the Ithaka Institute.
  • We have abbreviated Agathis Dammara Karbon to Adakarbon, a name that carries a dual meaning in Indonesia: “Ada Karbon” translates to “There is carbon.” This name reflects our mission to emphasize the omnipresence of carbon in various forms—whether as carbon dioxide, soil organic carbon, or other compounds. Carbon is fundamental to life, and through Adakarbon, we aim to raise awareness about its vital role in sustaining our planet
